100 Meters

100 Meters

Chasing your dreams or goals is never easy. While you may grow accustomed to the rhythm of striving toward them, the process itself doesn’t become any less demanding. This is especially true for those pursuing athletic ambitions. Many athletes who aim for the top of their sport will falter, lose their way, or fall short long before ever reaching the podium.

Where most sports anime focus on young protagonists with extraordinary, almost unnatural talent—often portrayed as destined for greatness—100 Meters takes a different approach. The film follows a cast of hopeful track-and-field athletes with no guarantee of success. In fact, its main character, Togashi, spends much of the film struggling with his career after hitting a plateau where raw talent alone is no longer enough.

In contrast, Komiya—who is initially inspired by Togashi—emerges as a self-taught prodigy, driven to break records at any cost, even at the expense of his own body. Throughout the film, the audience is presented with multiple interpretations of what it means to become a star athlete. In each case, we’re given a peek into how these runners think, what motivates them, and, ultimately, why they run.
