A conversation with Jessica Luna AKA @_eatslugs

Being a fan of anime can take many forms, and while it’s not a requirement of fandom, many people choose to contribute to the culture of anime fandom meaningfully. For decades, young artists have flocked to art schools, hoping to one day find a place in the creative world of anime, manga, and related media. One of these paths is becoming an independent illustrator. I follow a variety of artists and do my best to support them whenever I can.

For as long as I’ve known Jessica, her style, which celebrates girlhood, shōjo anime, and fashion with an almost conspiratorial glee, has always appealed to me. We’ve known each other through social media and her yearly Artist Alley tables at Anime NYC for a while now, and I wanted to sit down with her to discuss her art, her motivations, and her creative process.
