Akane-benashi world premiere
Over a year ago, I read the first few chapters of Akane-banashi, and as usual, not long after, news of an anime adaptation started to surface. That made sense, especially given the success of Gokujo Rokujo Shinjo.
About a month ago, I was scrolling through the Japan Society early in the morning, when I tend to make both my best and worst purchases, and saw that tickets were available to see the first episode ahead of its release. I jumped at the chance.
I’m glad I did, because in addition to the screening, we were treated to a live performance by English-speaking rakugo master Katsura Sunshine.
The first episode was beautifully produced, and a special bonus video showcased the voice actors learning rakugo to better understand its unique cadence.
Akane-banashi will begin streaming for free on YouTube with subtitles and will also be available dubbed on Netflix in May. Special thanks to Peter Tatara and everyone at the Japan Society for putting together the premiere event, and to Katsura Sunshine for the unforgettable performance.
