frieren beyond journey's end

frieren beyond journey's end

Frieren was wildly popular during its first season. Around the time it aired, I visited Japan for the first time and noticed something interesting: unlike the shonen-obsessed culture in the U.S., its success there makes perfect sense. Japanese culture doesn’t always express love as openly or outwardly as a relentlessly individualistic society like United States does.

Thankfully, even the relentless hype train can be diverted away from shonen—if a show is strong enough. Season 2 has proven just as popular, standing alongside major shonen titles like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. It genuinely makes me happy to see this series flourish.

What’s funny is watching people struggle to frame Frieren as a Jump-style shonen. They’re trying to force it into a box it was never meant to fit. What we’re seeing is a show so well-made—so excellent at exploring relationships, both romantic and otherwise—that it bypasses the attention-driven, hype-fueled mindset that now dominates how even niche fandoms talk about anime.

Yes, the animation in Frieren is beautiful. And yes, this season has more fight scenes. But that’s not the point. The reason people love it is because it’s about more than power systems and who’s stronger than who.
