Outlaw Star
In the 1990s, a wave of anime and manga helped define the foundation of modern anime. Series like Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho shaped what shōnen storytelling would look like for decades to come, while on the shōjo side, manga such as Hana-Kimi and Sailor Moon played a similarly influential role.
Just outside these mainstream hits, a smaller but highly significant space-western trend was emerging, producing now-classic series like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
Outlaw Star firmly belongs to this late-’90s sci-fi space-western movement. Unlike many of its peers, however, it doesn’t present a romanticized view of its protagonist. Gene isn’t a laid-back ex-mob bounty hunter in the mold of Spike, nor a pacifist gunslinger like Vash. Instead, the narrative portrays him as a genuinely complex person—someone defined equally by his virtues and his flaws.
While Outlaw Star remains popular, a rocky licensing history made it less accessible over time, preventing it from maintaining the same cultural presence as its contemporaries. Still, it absolutely deserves your time—especially if anything I’ve written here, or discussed in the show, has sparked your interest.

SERIES NOTES
────────────────────────────────────────
Rating: ★★★★★ (8/5)
The op still fucks
The ED Illustrations are still beautiful in a 60’s “WELOME TO OUTER SPACE” poster kind of way
The mechanical design is interesting and has a real unique point of view
Outlawstar number XTP09
The interface design feels like it echos ghost in the shell
The anatomy is technically correct but still exaggerated and cartoony
The show la setting feels like a Chinese centric version of a Star Wars
The show gets to the point where it feels like you’re hanging out with the characters by episode 13 and it feels right
I like that they don’t spend the entire time with spaceships
The show dose a great job creating a world that matters outside of the main cast
The preferences give you important world info you need to for the story. It’s not an elegant solution but it’s very effective
