Twilight Q
In the early 1980s, Japan was on top of the world, producing some of the most sought-after products on the planet and enjoying a booming economy to match. At the same time, the advent and widespread adoption of VHS meant that entertainment was no longer bound to theaters or television broadcasts.
That potent combination helped create the conditions for a golden era of direct-to-consumer animation known as the OVA boom.
As the decade progressed, however, the tone of the work being produced began to shift. Alongside the changing fortunes of the country that created it, anime started to grow more nostalgic for a high that had already passed rather than hopeful for what the future might bring.
This is where 1987’s Twilight Q sits. Technically, it’s a beautiful production, and its two anthology-style episodes still hold up in terms of animation. The vibes of each short, though, are far from optimistic.
That tone makes sense, especially when you consider the director of the second episode, Mamoru Oshii, who would later go on to direct Ghost in the Shell. You can already see hints of the themes and visual style he would explore later in Ghost in the Shell in Case 583, which makes the episode historically interesting—even if it’s not quite as strong, quality-wise, as the OVA’s first episode, A Knot in Time.

▸ Episode 1: A Knot in Time: Reflection
Rating: ★★★★★
Watched: Mar 3, 2026
Very 1980’s coded interns of style
The camera just vanishes
Clearly well animated but still using limited animation from diolog scenes
It time jumps to 2023!
It’s a closed loop!
▸ Episode 2: Mystery Case: File 538
Watched: Mar 4, 2026
Rewatched: 1x
The trippy koi transformation happens first thing!
So clearly made by oshii! It’s like a test real for every thing he would do in ghost in the shell
You feel the budget restrictions on this more then the fact one
The fart joke is WILD
The vibe feels closer to Innocence than the first GITS
The point is the slightly spooky vibe
