Yokohama Shopping Trip Log
In the last post and episode, I talked a lot about Japan’s economic fortunes and how they shaped the OVAs being produced in the latter half of the OVA boom. With Yokohama Shopping Trip Log (YSTL), you can see what those uneasy economic and cultural feelings eventually gave way to.
In YSTL, the world has already fallen apart—civilization has declined and many people are gone—but the OVA offers a vision of what might come after. The emotional core of the show is far less dark than OVAs like Twilight Q. There’s certainly a sense of melancholy in YSTL, but it never feels oppressive.
Overall, YSTL is a slice-of-life iyashikei story that seems aware its audience is living in the aftermath of a changed world. Yet it quietly suggests that life doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. After all, the world already fell apart—and you’re still here.
